God classes foolish talking along with some very unattractive companions,"But fornication,and all uncleanliness,or covetousness,let it not be named among you,as becometh the saints:neither filthiness,nor FOOLISH TALKING,nor jesting,which are not convenient:but rather giving of thanks."Ephesians 5:3-4
"Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth,but that which is good to the use of edifying."Eph 4:29
The words of a child of God should not be wasted in gossiping,unclean jokes,unclean conversation,strife,insults,but rather they are supposed to be words that bring healing to the sick,salvation to the lost,and uplifting those discouraged.
This doesn't mean that a christian should not be happy or laugh or be joyful,infact one of the fruits of the Holyspirit is joy.
And God's people are expected to be joyful,sing,shout,laugh,leap for joy(read psalm 100:1-2,psalm47:1,2samuel 6:14,psalm 149:3,luke 6:23,Nehemiah 8:10)
Make sure your joy isn't coming from corrupt conversation.
Present your whole body as a living sacrifice,holy and acceptable to God(Romans 12:1).
If you have surrendered to God in every other area of your life but haven't given Him your tongue too,you have to do it because careless talking defiles the body(God's temple)in the same way that other sins mentioned along with it above do.
This is why the bible says we are to be slow to speak but quick to hear,because in a multitude of words sin lacketh not.
A christian should never be careless with their tongue.
Let it be briddled by the HolySpirit.
