The job of the Holy Spirit is to lead us into all truth and guide us along the right way and that is what He does.
He is our helper on our journey to Heaven. Therefore when we fall, He gets us up.
Unfortunately, the devil takes advantage of us in our weak moments to make us feel like terrible sinners and unworthy of Jesus. Many times, this makes us feel like we are wasting our time serving God and we should just give up because we are unworthy and will never enter Heaven.
There is a need to distinguish between the voice of the Holy Spirit and that of the accuser of the brethren.
Indeed he is sly and sometimes comes as an Angel of light but ends up drawing us away from God.
Conviction means that someone has succeeded in making you believe that something is true. In other words, they have convinced you about something and that is called being convicted.
For example you have done something you knew you shouldn't have done like talking bad about someone, the Holy Spirit who dwells within you will convince you that what you have done is wrong. He does this in various ways.
For example, you can hear a still small voice telling you in your spirit that what you did is wrong and you need to repent of that or, you will feel grieved in your heart until you make the wrong right.
You will not find peace until you do the right thing and at that moment, the Holy Spirit makes sure that you know what wrong you have done so that you can correct it.
Satan on the other hand comes like an Angel of light pretending to be the Holy Spirit and often tries to make us feel guilty. When Satan comes to you, you will feel like sinner and unworthy yet you will not know exactly what wrong you have done so that you can correct it.
Unlike the Holy Spirit,Satan will make it seem like everything is wrong and there is nothing you can do about it and so you are a terrible sinner and you should stay away from God. You will feel miserable and yet not know exactly what wrong you have done. The Holy Spirit lets you know EXACTLY what you have done so that you make amends.
Once you start feeling like a sinner and so you should stay away from God, know that it is the devil. The Holy Spirit does make us feel sorrow when He convicts us but the bible says that that Godly sorrow produces repentance that leads to salvation ( 2 Corinthians 7:10). This means that after He has convicted you, you even see yourself that yes, I have done wrong and I need to repent and so you will feel sorrowful about this sin until you repent . However, He doesn't force you to repent. He just let's you know that what you have done is not right. This is because it is your personal choice whether to repent or not but He wants you to repent, for the salvation of your own soul.
The Holy Spirit will also not make you feel like staying away from God but rather to draw near to Him in realisation that He is your only hope for salvation.
Satan makes you believe God is your enemy and so you should run to the things and people of this world ( who are his tools) for comfort. He is aiming at making you sin. He is your real enemy and yet acting like your friend.
Satan also reminds you of past sins and makes you feel like God still counts them and that you have been disqualified from the Heavenly race and he makes you feel like you are sinning every second and you will never make it. He is the Father of all lies and so you should tell him, " Away with you Satan for it is written that light has no communion with darkness!" Know that only those who are in Hell are disqualified. Where there is life, there is hope for salvation.
The Holy Spirit assures you of God's forgiveness and power to wash all all sins with His blood. If you ever do something and you hear " Even last time you did this or that" then just know definitely that that is the devil. John 1:9 says,"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from ALL unrighteousness."
When the devil comes, he also makes you angry so that you can feel like God is unfair. All he wants is to make you sin against God by complaining against Him. The devil keeps nagging us," you are a sinner, you are a sinner, you are a sinner!" and so you feel angry and hopeless. He makes you feel like God is to blame. Yet he is the one who is making you feel like a sinner and not God!
Satan also makes you scared of God. As if God is ever Waiting for you to sin so that He can say," Anha! I have caught you sinning. Now you will face my wrath" Yet the bible says God is watching over us for good and not for bad. He wants you to walk in the right way and He takes pleasure in that. The only one watching you like a hawk is Satan himself. The bible says that he is the accuser of the brethren so this means that he is ever trying to see what mistakes you make. God on the other hand is watching OVER you and not WATCHING you. That is the difference.
This means that He wants to protect you from the real enemy who makes God seem like your enemy.
Hope this was helpful.
