HOW TO PUT ON THE HELMET OF SALVATION
Hi friends! I’ve heard many people say that they are struggling with sin in their minds and don’t know how to overcome it.
Many other people are still comfortable with this, because they think that only what is done physically is regarded as sin and not what is in the mind.
However the Bible in Psalms 66:18 talks about sin which is in the heart and not done physically and how it is still regarded as sin.
For example, I may have stopped watching secular Tv because I was convicted by the Holy Spirit that the contents of secular Tv are lying, sexual immorality, violence etc and that doesn’t please the Lord.
However, when I’m bored,I may spend my time going over the secular movies I watched when I was in the world and even laughing about things I found funny, and taking satisfaction in feeling as if I’m watching them again just by going through them in my mind.
I may think, “This is not sin because I am not actually doing it,but it is just in my mind”
Secular Tv is just an example of the thoughts one may have, but there are many other thoughts such as reminiscing over sinful past relationships and many other things.
Some realise that it is still sin while others do not realise that it is sin because they feel it has not been acted out.
Psalms 66:18 says, “If I regard iniquity in my HEART,The Lord will not hear.”
This shows that sin is not only what is performed outwards but also what is in our hearts. Many people focus on what is done outside, forgetting that even what is inside matters.
Mathew 23:25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but INSIDE they are full of extortion and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also.”
This should be a strong warning to all of us that just as we strive to do the right thing outside,we should also be careful to ensure that the correct thoughts are running through our minds.
This post is to help many people who have been asking how they can control their thoughts to ensure they conform to the word of God because sometimes they just seem to be out of their control.
Ephesians 6:17 talks about the need for Christians to put on THE HELMET OF SALVATION. The purpose of a helmet in a war is to protect the head against any arrows that may be fired towards that area,so that they can bounce off and not cause injury or death.
Spiritually, the bible tells us that as Christians we are also at war and hence the need to put on the Armor of God which includes the Helmet of Salvation.
Ephesians 6:11-12 “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
This Helmet is called the HELMET OF SALVATION,meaning that putting it on ensures Salvation and NOT putting it on leads to damnation.
In order to overcome sinful thoughts, one needs to put on the Helmet of Salvation so that whatever arrows that Satan throws may bounce off the Helmet of Salvation.
2 Corinthians 10:4-5 says “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, BRINGING EVERY THOUGHT INTO CAPTIVITY TO THE OBEDIENCE OF CHRIST.”
This verse above shows that Satan will try to attack you with THOUGHTS and that you have to bring them into CAPTIVITY,to ensure that they are obedient to Christ.
Romans 12:2 also tells us, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the RENEWING OF YOUR MIND that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
The answer on how to put on the Helmet of Salvation is found in Phillipians 4:8 which says, “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy,MEDITATE on these thoughts.”
This means that we have to FILL our minds with the WORD OF GOD.
Matthew 12:43-45 “When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds it EMPTY, swept, and put in order. Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.”
This evil spirit has a place to return to because while the room is clean and swept through repentance, it is EMPTY. There is nothing there so he still has room to dwell in.
The secret is to ensure that when this evil spirit returns,he finds its FILLED and he will have no room.
We have to FILL our minds with the word of God, the bible. If you spend your time reading the Word of God, your thoughts will be about the Word of God. This means that when Satan tries to attack you with sinful thoughts, you will even be able to take every thought CAPTIVE as instructed by the bible, because you will be able to rebuke that thought using the word of God. For example if a sexually immoral thought comes, you will be able to say, “The Word of God says the sexually immoral shall not inherit the Kingdom of God, come out of my mind Satan!”
However if your mind is empty and not filled with the Word of God,you will not even know what to say, because you are not aware of what the word of God says because you do not read it in the first place.
Controlling one’s thoughts is very important, because it is the bridge between standing strong and backsliding.
Before one acts out something, it begins in the mind. For example, I can’t decide to buy groceries without first having thought about it in my mind. Its not possible. So before an action is done,it starts from the mind. This means that if one’s thoughts are sinful all the time, they will end up performing the acts of sin. That is why it is important to ensure that we PUT ON THE HELMET OF SALVATION as explained in this post.
We should always remember that the Holy Spirit is there to help us in our Heavenly journey even as the word of God says and we are not alone.
Anyone can receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit through asking continually in prayer until one receives.
Shalom.
