WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO LIVE A HOLY LIFE? DOES IT MEAN YOU WILL NEVER EVER SIN AGAIN?
God created us and is in the best position to know exactly what we can and cannot do.
He commands us to live a holy life, therefore that shows that it’s possible because God cannot command us to do something He knows is impossible!
1 Peter 1:16,”Because it is written, ’be holy for I am holy.”
This is actually a command here,God is telling us to be holy.
Living a holy life does not mean that someone has never sinned before, nor does it mean they will never ever commit any sin in future until they die.
Living a holy life means to repent of all sin and to start to follow Jesus and live for His glory.
It means the person no longer lives to obey all that their flesh wants but is guided by what God wants.
They do not deliberately continue to live in their sin.
The blood of Jesus washes away their past sins and makes their robes pure and holy before the Lord and according to the Lord such a person is living in holiness because they are not living in their sins.
The blood of Jesus does not wash away sin that someone is unwilling to repent of and has continued to live in,that makes someone unholy to the Lord.
DOES IT MEAN THAT CHRISTIAN WILL NEVER EVER SIN AGAIN THEIR WHOLE LIVES?
No! Because that person is still human, there will be times they might make mistakes on their journey with Jesus, however as soon as they realize they sinned, they repent of that sin and the blood of Jesus washes away those sins and they continue to live in obedience to God.
They do not keep going back to their sin and they do not deliberately live in sin.
To the Lord regardless of the fact that there was a time they made a mistake on their journey, maybe they over reacted when they were angry and they realize they shouldn’t have done that and they repent and turn from that, they are living a holy life to the Lord because that sin that the Christian accidentally fell in has also been washed away by the blood of Jesus.
They do not keep going back to their sin nor do they continue living in their sin after realizing it.
They make every effort not to go back to their sin and the Holy Spirit gives them strength.
They have turned from their sins and are not living in their sins.
They are living a Holy Life not because they never ever make any mistakes, but because they are living their life in obedience to God, and even when they make a mistake and accidentally sin, they do not stay in their sin nor are they careless with sin.
They do not have habitual sin because they have forsaken all their sins and whatever sin that might have caught them off guard e.g if they realize their action negatively affected another person, they repent and they do everything possible to ensure they don’t fall into that sin again because they have the fear of God and do not take sin lightly.
There are mistakes that Christians could make just because they are human, for example someone can make a mistake in relating to another person and maybe unknowingly hurt someone and when they realize they ask forgiveness and repent.
They do not continue to stay in sin.
But you cannot just make a mistake and fall into something like fornication and drunkenness unless you backslid first because you would have had to first entertain the lustful thoughts and entertain sin.
Living a holy life means you are not playing around with sin but you have abandoned all sin and whatever sin you might commit accidentally in the future, as soon as you realize, you do not continue to deliberately stay in that sin justifying it by saying no one is holy, instead you quickly repent from it and continue to follow after Jesus.
You know the value of the blood of Jesus and do not just carelessly trample on it,taking advantage of His grace and willingness to forgive.
You value His forgiveness and that is why you do not continue in sin.
You deliberately obey Jesus and close the doors to sin.
You do not entertain sin but turn from it as soon as the Holy Spirit highlights it.
You are the Lord’s vineyard and He keeps on pruning you,and perfecting you and so whatever the Lord brings to your attention as unpleasing to Him,you get rid of it from your life and continue to follow Jesus.
When we are living a holy life we do not stay in our sin but rather repent from them.
That is living a holy life and it is possible by the power of the Holy Spirit.
IF IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE,GOD WOULD NOT HAVE COMMANDED US TO DO IT.
He cannot command us to do something impossible!
The fact that He told us to be holy it means there are people who have already gone before us who lived a holy life, and there are people right now living a holy life and there will be people after us who will also live holy life if the Lord tarries.
IT IS POSSIBLE TO LIVE A HOLY LIFE BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.
God actually commands it for all His children!
Some verses commanding holiness:
Romans 12:1,”I beseech you therefore brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice ,HOLY, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”
1 Peter 1:15,”But as He who called you is holy, YOU ALSO BE HOLY in all your conduct.”
2 Corinthians 7:1,”Therefore,having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, PERFECTING HOLINESS in the fear of God.”
Romans 6:22,”But now having been set free from sin, and having becomes slaves of God, YOU HAVE YOUR FRUIT TO HOLINESS.”
