People often misuse the term, “Jesus friend of sinners” as though it means Jesus approves of people remaining in sin and just accept them in their sin.
And some misinterpret it to mean Christians should also join the people of the world in sinning as a way of trying to bring them to salvation.
But the real reason Jesus was called a friend of sinners is clearly stated in the Bible.
Luke 15:1-2
“Then all the tax collectors and the sinners drew near to Him TO HEAR HIM.
And the Pharisees and scribes complained, saying, “This Man receives sinners and eats with them.”
Jesus was called the friend of sinners because He wasn’t discriminating against the sinners like the Pharisees did.
Instead He saw sinners as lost people who need salvation.
Therefore He went and preached to them.
And the sinners were with Jesus so that they could listen to Him preaching.
And many repented, becoming children of God.
Jesus being called a friend of sinners doesn’t mean that sinners can continue in sin and find mercy.
Mercy is only found when we repent and turn from sin.
Salvation is in repentance from sin and believing in Jesus.
After this we must bear fruit of righteousness, which is living in the fear of God.
We must pray and ask God to free us from addictions of sin,He does!
We must ask Him to baptize us with the Holy Spirit.
Then we must make sure we start to pray and seek Jesus daily so that we may have power over sin and continue to walk in victory over the flesh until Jesus calls us home.
Sinners who refuse to repent till death will not face Jesus as a friend in death.
Instead they will face the wrath of God.
Hebrews 10:26-27
“For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.”
Luke 13:2-3
“And Jesus answered and said to them, “Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans, because they suffered such things?
I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.”
